Abstract

AFOTEC (the International Service for the Support of Training and Technologies in West Africa/Sahel) trained women to manufacture a simple hand pump called the La Malienne. The report describes the evaluation of two such projects in Casamance in southern Senegal, which targetted the same ethnic groups, using the same technology, but employing contrasting organizational approaches. The objective of this thesis is to describe and compare the socio-economic impacts of "La Malienne" projects and to analyze the results using a theoretical framework to define the fundamental organizational factors which influence the outcome of small-scale development projects.
