Abstract

This training manual on participatory rural appraisal (PRA) has been written for field staff of the Integrated Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project, Karnataka, India. The PRA activities can be completed within 5 days, ending with the formulation of a Village Action Plan, the Environmental Sanitation and Waterpoint Plan, and the Final Presentation to the village. The manual reviews four techniques used in PRA: semi-structured interviews; direct observation; ranking; and review meetings. It includes procedures for the following PRA activities: "ice breaker" - street theatre; walkabout/do-it-yourself; social map; household interview; household sketch; water quality ranking; seasonal calendar; institutions; caste structure; time lines/trends; wealth ranking; gender issues (daily activity profile, resource access and control profile); presentation of PRA findings to village; and ranking of priorities. The activity descriptions include a list "do's and don't's", and in most cases a checklist. The manual concludes with the action/workplans mentioned above and procedures for follow-up.
