Abstract | Despite the concern for improving information management in water and sanitation institutions in developing countries, most of the demand for information seems to come from users in the North. The development of information systems and services in the water and sanitation sector has been neglected as a result of its multidisciplinary nature, multiplicity of institutions, low levels of investment, lack of economic incentive to carry out research and the fact that much sector information is 'grey'or unpublished. There is strong northern bias when it comes to those who produce and use sector information. A notable exception is the audience of the IRC newsletter where two-thirds of subscribers are from the South. Subsidisation hampers the development of sustainable indigenous sector information services. Finally information needs are largely defined by northern and not southern institutions. |
