Abstract | The Ilorin water supply expansion programme is designed to raise plant output to nearly four times its existing capacity. this will satisfy the domestic, public, commercial and industrial needs of the city up to the year 2005. The additional water will come from an existing dam. Reservoir operation studies, based on present and future withdrawal rates, show that the system will experience reduction in potential evaporation, reduction in active storage, loss of fishing areas, reduced flow to the downstream areas and an increased growth of aquatic vegetation. In general, the impact is moderate and the adverse effects can be significantly reduced with appropriate mitigative measures. |
