Abstract

This curriculum is part of an urban environment project in Pursat, Cambodia sponsored by SAWA/EC. This school hygiene and sanitation programme involved in placing of 2000-litre rainwater jars, garbage bins and the construction of double-pit pour/flush latrines at Pursat Town's pre and primary schools, whose pupils make up 33 per cent of Pursat Town's population and are therefore an important target group for health education and promotion activities. This hygiene education curriculum was developed for pre and primary school teachers in Pursat Town to transmit health and hygiene education messages to the students based on the child-to-child approach which encourages children to work together to spread health ideas and practices in their homes and communities. This curriculum consists of eleven lessons on topics such as personal hygiene, why clean water is important, the influence of water on health, school hygiene, and food hygiene. Visual aids include twenty-seven large posters and one hygiene story flipchart. Each lesson specifies the learning objectives; the teaching methods to be used such as discussions, games, demonstrations; and includes lesson-specific teaching aids such as posters and objects for demonstrations. The emphasis of each lesson for the student is to remember the simple points made and to act on them to spread health ideas in order to promote hygiene education messages and to improve health practices in the community.
