Abstract | This manual describes the manufacture and use of an improved human-powered pump esp. designed for small-scale irrigation in cases where sandy soils make it impossible to construct irrigation canals. It is an attempt to promote the treadle irrigation pump which is able to lift up to seven thousand litres of water per hour using the power of the human body. The pump, which evolved from the Bangladesh prototype into a fully portable pump with both lift and pressure capacity, can be locally made at low cost in small-scale metal-working shops typical of less-developed nations. The authors' intention is to boost the potential for a broader dissemination of technology by bringing the pump to the attention of technicians and development organizations. They warn, however, that careful evaluation of the market potential for sales of the pump are an important prerequisite to any decision to promote its use. |
