Abstract

This publication was prepared as the first phase of a regional project launched by UNESCO and ACSAD, with the aim of
contributing to the traditional development and management of groundwater resources in the Arab region for a sustainable
socio-economic development. The document presents in its first part the major groundwater basins in the Arab region and their
quantitative and qualitative aspects. It then surveys the different forms of groundwater contamination in general, before
reviewing the state of knowledge of groundwater deterioration in the Arabian Peninsula, the Mashrek (Syria, Jordan, Iraq), the
Nile Valley and finally the Maghreb. The last part proposes adequate methodology for groundwater protection including the
establishment of protection zones, groundwater treatment processes, artificial recharge and regulation, and enforcement.
