Abstract

Proceedings of the three day Workshop on Gender and Water Resources Management, Lessons Learned and Strategies for the Future in Stockholm. The workshop revolved around seven themes: policy and management issues; water resources management: the environmental perspectives; environmental hygiene, health education and sanitation; river basin management-irrigation-flood control; domestic water supplies; methodology development; experience with integrating a gender perspective within some External Support Agencies (ESAs). About half of the papers deal with water resources management in general, irrigation, flood control and river basin management. The papers on domestic water supply are mostly case studies (Latin America, South Asia, Malawi). With respect to the ESAs there are two papers on UNICEF and the UNDP/World Bank. On top of that there is an extensive discussion on the involvement of the Swedish Development Authority in the water sector in India, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The experience of the Finnish Development Authority is highlighted in seven case descriptions of projects in Viet Nam, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar, and China.
