Abstract

This chapter reviews developments and trends from 1972 to 2002 in freshwater availablity, quality and management policies at the global and regional level. The regions covered are Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, North America, West Asia, and the Polar Regions. While developed countries have made significant strides in addressing water quality issues, the situation has actually worsened in developing countries, with many of them experiencing rising water demand and pollution. More countries are facing water stress or scarcity.
