The Water Research Commission (WRC) of South Africa has allocated ZAR 4.5 million (EUR 633,800) for research on rural water supply and sanitation for the period 2001-2005. The WRC has initiated two research programmes:

Abstract

The Water Research Commission (WRC) of South Africa has allocated ZAR 4.5 million (EUR 633,800) for research on rural water supply and sanitation for the period 2001-2005. The WRC has initiated two research programmes:

1. Effective institutional arrangements and support for water services provision in rural areas (ZAR 3.0 million = EUR 422,600);
2. Improvement of the health of rural people through promoting adequate sanitation and hygienic practices (ZAR 1.5 million = EUR 211,200)

Topics include training/capacity building, decentralization, monitoring, sanitation/hygiene promotion by school children, communication strategies, and financing.
