Abstract

The relationship between substrata characteristics and the occurence of iron and manganese in groundwater was established in a test site in Pura town, the Philippines. A high concentration of iron and manganese bicarbonate was present in a zone with a low redox potential (reduction zone) and a grayey green to dark gray in colour as opposed to the yellowish brown to brown colour of the underlying oxidation zone. Water of an acceptable quality could therefore be obtained by installing a well screen along the oxidation horizon and by sealing off the groundwater flow from the reduction zone by cement grout. Problems related to high concentrations of humic iron responsible for so-called "coloured water", were not investigated.
