Abstract

The Symposium on Environmental Pollution and its Management in East Africa held in Dar Es Salaam in September 1989 addressed the growing pollution problem faced by Eastern African countries. Indiscriminate export of agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals banned in developed countries, unauthorized and irresponsible dumping of toxic wastes, and too rapid industrialization are a few of the issues needing attention. The 44 papers presented at the symposium are divided into 8 major sections. These sections are: plenary lectures, organic and industrial wastes, agrochemicals, heavy metals, monitoring methods, modelling and management, treatment and recycling, laws and legislation, and 'miscellaneous'. The theme of the symposium was that "prevention is better than cure". Papers range from the socioeconomic to the highly technical in scope.
