Abstract

Much attention has been devoted to the study of fluoride-bearing goundwater in North China as groundwater is the main source for water supply there. This has led to fluoride poisoning which has seriously affected human health. This article summarizes the results of studies in North China. It was found that regional high-fluoride-bearing groundwater has a regular distribution corresponding with the development of endemic fluoride poisoning. A relationship was found with paleogeographic and paleoclimatic conditions, geology, and hydrogeology, particularly concerning types of hydrogeochemistry, pH value of groundwater, degree of mineralization et cetera. The author concludes that many effective measures have been taken to reduce the fluoride content in drinking water and to cure the disease after analyzing the distribution and environmental characteristics of high-fluoride-bearing groundwater.
