Abstract

This is the second edition of a book in a step-by-step/ question and answer form. It introduces the newcomer to the field of communications technology and explains basic terms and concepts, offering advice and contacts, listing computer communications networks and local e-mail service providers and suggesting ways to benefit from these communication tools. The second edition also contains discussion on the World Wide Web. Computer-based communications - through electronic mail (e-mail), bulletin board systems, computer conferencing and networking and on-line databases - offer NGOs, particularly in developing countries, a modern, effective and affordable communications toolkit with which to share information, network, conduct research and support advocacy work and campaigns on development issues. The directory section has now be renamed as: A sampling of networks in developing countries, as it is impossible to offer a comprehensive directory of service providers in such a rapidly changing environment.
