Abstract | The Joint Monitoring Programme for Water and Sanitation (JMP) report 2013 states that in India 59 per cent of people or in number some 626 million still practice open defecation and India is lagging behind 11 years to meet the Millennium Development Goal target. The Indian government had resolved to reduce the open defecation by 50% by 2015. Unless the sanitation situation is addressed in an urgent manner, India will fall far short from realizing its goals of reducing child malnutrition and mortality, as poor sanitation is a significant factor contributing to both malnutrition and child mortality. |
