Abstract

The thesis begins with background chapters on the importance of sanitation in relation to health, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Decade (IDWSSD), and sociocultural aspects of water supply and sanitation. This is followed by a description of the national health policy in Indonesia, with special attention given to the water and sanitation sector. Dutch bilateral aid for Indonesia is discussed, both in general terms and specifically in an evaluation of the Botabek Sewerage and Drainage Project and the IKK Sanitation Improvement Programme.
