Abstract

In the past five years, various organisations, under the umbrella of the MUS Group, have been working on so-called Multiple-Use water Services (MUS). It starts from the widely observed practice that people use single-use designed systems for multiple purposes, whether formally allowed or not. The MUS approach aims to take people’s multiple water needs as starting point of planning and design of new infrastructure or rehabilitations, and adapt the design and management accordingly. In this way, it is expected, more livelihood benefits from investments in water development can be realised and a contribution can be made to sustainability of services. [authors abstract]
