Abstract

The book is a selected and edited collection of articles originally published in 1982-1986 in Waterlines, supplemented by some older material from Appropriate Technology. There are 11 chapters each preceded by a short introductory note. Chapter 1 develops theappropriate technology approach and the importance of community participation to adapt to local needs. The next 2 chapters deal with underground sources, both shallow wells and tube-wells. These are followed by 2 chapters on surface sources, proceeding from rain-water harvesting on micro-catchment principles to the conservation of stream and river flow diverted by weirs or collected behind dams. The choice between pumping methods with reference to some alternatives is discussed in chapter 6, followed by the testing and development of handpumps and their maintenance in the next 2 chapters. Transport and storage is considered in chapter 9 with particular reference to alleviating the burden of water-carrying by women. Education and training are discussed in chapter 10, and planning and management in the final chapter.
