Abstract

This workshop was organized to learn about and discuss participatory approaches to research in agriculture and nutrition. The objectives of the workshop were: i. to familiarize participants with the concept of participatory research; ii. to review participatory research methods and their application in development research; iii. to discuss and appraise the value of participatory research for teaching and research initiatives in an academic environment; and iv. to expose participants to a variety of resource materials on the subject. The workshop included presentations on rapid rural appraisal (RRA); rapid assessment procedures (RAP); participatory rural appraisal (PRA), and lot quality assurance sampling (LQAS). Case studies drew on knowledge from a variety of disciplines including water supply and sanitation, forestry, agriculture, and natural resources management. In these field experiences from Kenya, Tanzania and Sudan are presented. The last paper in the report looks into the problem areas in PRA and related methodologies.
