Abstract

This case study examined Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) as an approach to improve sanitation and hygiene in communities and schools in the One Million Initiative (OMI) in Mozambique. OMI is a large-scale rural water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programme jointly implemented by the Government of Mozambique (GoM) and UNICEF, with financial support from the Government of The Netherlands (GoN). CLTS was adopted by the Programa Nacional de Abastecimento de Água e Saneamento Rural (PRONASAR) and a number of other programmes and projects in the country. It was instrumental in developing guidelines for safe sanitation in rural Mozambique.
