Abstract

Documentary film, dubbed into English, of the Office de Radiodiffusion-Television Camerounaise (CRTV) about the 2000 Water Points Project in Cameroon which aims to rehabilitate neglected and broken rural water points with foot-operated Vergnet pumps. Community management is the keyword in the project which will last three years. Before a water point is selected for rehabilitation the community has to establish a Water Point Management Committee with full responsibility for the financing of all the necessary maintenance and repair, including spare parts. Training is provided for pump mechanics and spare parts shops are established. The project has proved to be a success, but more than three years are needed to change the communities' attitudes from dependency on the government to self-help.
