Abstract

The aim of this book is to present a less well known alternative technology, the low-pressure buried pipeline system for surface irrigation. This offers improvements over conventional surface irrigation systems with canals, without the sophistication and high cost of pressurized sprinkler and trickle irrigation. It is thus an intermediate technology which may be appropriate on many irrigation schemes in the South. It will normally be more efficient and more flexible in operation than conventional canal systems, with fewer environmental problems. The costs are considerably lower than for sprinkler or trickle irrigation systems, and comparable to those of lined canals.
