Abstract

The video describes IFAD's Special Programme for Africa which was launched in 1986 in response to growing concern about land degradation. Soil and water conservation and agroforestry represent key elements in the programmes financed. This video includes cases studies from Burkina Faso, Lesotho and Niger which demonstrate the approach used in the programme design. The techniques used are based on local traditions where possible, with simple, replicable conservation systems being emphasized, and the land users being involved in the decision making process. Points also mentioned in the video are the appropriate use of incentives and the need to protect women from an increased labour burden.
