Abstract

The Best Practices Database is a searchable database which contains proven solutions to common urban problems facing the world's cities today. The database's records take the form of case studies which have the following basic structure: summary, narrative, contacts, categories and in some cases video and/or a graphic. The information for the database was submitted by communities from around the world. The database was first presented at the United Nations Habitat II City Summit, at Istanbul, Turkey, in June 1996. The database is divided into the following categories: poverty eradication, economic development, social services, environmental protection, infrastructure (including safe water provision, waste management & treatment, and sanitation); housing and land use; urban governance; civil engagement and cultural vitality (including gender); disasters and emergency preparedness; production and consumption patterns; urban and regional processes; and technology and tools. The entire database, with all selected projects, is also available on the Internet (http://www.bestpractices.org/) and on diskette and in a printed version.
