Abstract | This report discusses the use of bamboo pipes in rural water supply, with special reference to experiences in Tanzania. Laboratory investigations were carried out on the hydraulic properties of pipes made from bamboo of the species Arundinaria Alpina and Bambusa Vulgaris. Friction factors and roughness coefficients were determined for unlined pipes and pipes lined with tar. The maximum pressure the pipes could withstand before bursting was also recorded. The report also provides information on the design, construction, operation and maintenance of bamboo water supply schemes, as well as a cost comparison with polythene pipes. |
