Abstract | The development of appropriate environmental standards for developing countries has not received much attention. Most developing countries with set environmental standards have simply adopted these standards from industrialised countries without taking into account the associated costs of surveillance, monitoring, and follow-up action. Case studies of water quality in Southeast Asia and air and water quality in California are used to emphasise the need to produce two manuals for the formulation of appropriate environmental standards for developing countries on air and water quality. These manuals would help to determine country-specific and cost-effective environmental standards. |
