Abstract

This manual provides guidance to engineers and regulatory and local officials on the choice of alternative, cost-effective sewer systems for low population density areas. The following systems are reviewed: pressure sewers (grinder-pump (GP) and septic tank effluent pump (STEP) systems); small-diameter gravity sewers (SDG); and vacuum sewers. The relative merit of each alternative system is presented with regard to physical, administrative and technological requirements for a given site. This is followed by chapters on system design, construction, management options, and operation and maintenance. The final chapter gives examples of wastewater characteristics of alternative sewer systems and wastewater treatment methods. These and most of the other examples in the manual are taken from experiences in the USA.
