Abstract

The Norwegian development program (under NORAD) is placing a high priority on improving the standard of living and creating work opportunities for women in developing countries. This report outlines the present position of women in Zimbabwe in section A, including health, education, employment, role in agricultural production and legal and societal status. Part B discusses the Norwegian strategy for assistance to Zimbabwean women. The integrated rural water supply and sanitation program has as its objectives health improvement, reduced workload for women and improvement of socio-economic conditions. The program includes construction of washing stands, washing rooms, pit latrines and cattle troughs close to water sources; new ideas for micro-irrigation and the organization and training of village water authorities (including women) to operate and maintain water supply and sanitation systems.
