Abstract

Sixty per cent of land in the occupied West Bank is categorised as Area C, where Israeli military authorities have full control over security and planning and zoning. In this area, water and sanitation infrastructure built, maintained or repaired without a permit can be demolished. Yet, permits are notoriously difficult to
obtain. As a result, there is a severe lack of access to water and sanitation infrastructure and services, and the public's ability to adopt and maintain adequate
hygiene is limited. This has a detrimental impact on the health and livelihoods of communities located in Area C, and can lead to or perpetuate the impacts of displacement. Communities living in Area C are some of the poorest and most vulnerable in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT). [authors abstract]
