Abstract

This report documents the situation of water supply and sanitation services in seven countries of Central America. Additionally it analyses ongoing and proposed investments to estimate the additional funding needed to meet the proposed targets. The report has separate chapters for each of the seven countries covered. The update shows that water coverage rose from 56 to 63 per cent in the last twelve years, sanitation coverage has risen from 42 to 67 per cent. Yet in urban areas environmental contamination is rising, poising an increased health risk. Advances in coverage could very well be offset by deteriorating water sources and living conditions. The future of water and sanitation, particularly in urban areas, should be viewed within the broader environmental health context.
