Upper Denkyira East, which is endemic with Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), has long struggled with inadequate access to potable drinking water, especially in smaller communities. This lack of clean water worsens the prevalence of NTDs, affecting many residents.
The Municipal Assembly has been working with the municipal health department and IRC Ghana to provide safe WASH services and to significantly reduce or eradicate these neglected tropical diseases. The initiative prioritises healthcare facilities and communities affected by Neglected Tropical Diseases to receive water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities.
The initiative is guided by a water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) master plan, which was launched in May 2022 and developed with key stakeholders from Upper Denkyira East, including the Municipal Assembly (UDEMA), Upper Denkyira East Municipal Health Department, Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Ghana Education Service (GES), civils society and focal persons of the Anesvad Foundation.
