Sanitation Challenge for Ghana was a competition running from November 2015 to June 2019 open to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana.
The UK Aid funded Sanitation Challenge for Ghana Initiative is part of a large action research programme called Ideas to Impact which tested the applicability and effectiveness of inducement prizes for addressing critical development challenges in climate change adaptation in Nepal, energy access in Kenya and liquid waste management (LWM) in Ghana. IRC served as Implementing Agent and provided Technical Assistance to the lead Government Institutions a) Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD 2015-2016) later Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources (2017-2019) in the design and management of the prize. IRC provided support systems including help desk and support email portal to facilitate the development and implementation of LWM strategies by MMDAs. The initiative resulted in the development of Liquid waste management strategies by 40 MMDAs and implementation of value chain liquid waste management strategies in 17 MMDAs.
