Out of solidarity

Today our homepage is black as we are standing in solidarity with civil society organisations whose voices, views and ideas cannot be expressed.

IRC proudly supports citizens' voices. Through programmes such as Watershed – empowering citizens, we support civil society in standing up for the human rights to water and sanitation.

Over the past few years, the space for civil society has been shrinking. In more than half of all countries worldwide, laws exist that restrict freedom of expression and peaceful demonstrations. Activists and organisations are intimidated and increasingly confronted with violence. In 2017, 312 human rights defenders were assassinated, simply because they made their voices heard.

We, at IRC are standing in solidarity with the global SPEAK! Campaign organised by CIVICUS.
