Betelhem started with her BSc. in Civil Engineering at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. She then continued with an MSc. in Environmental Sciences (Specialisation in Water Systems and Global Change) at Wageningen University and Research. She concentrated her studies on water quality and water resources management. From October 2017 she will be working with IRC Ethiopia via the Young Expert Programme (YEP). In Ethiopia she will be mainly involved in the Sustainable WASH Systems Initiative.
