UNICEF, IRC and Water For People have launched a partnership for strengthening national water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) systems

UNICEF, IRC and Water For People have launched a partnership for strengthening national water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) systems. Combining resources and experience, through 'Partnership for WASH Systems in Africa' we seek to build capacities and deliver critical support to governments, initially focused on 18 African countries. Planned activities include capacity building in WASH systems and financing, on-demand technical assistance, documentation of lessons learned and advocacy for systems strengthening.
UNICEF works in over 100 countries to help provide access to clean water and reliable sanitation, and to promote basic hygiene practices in rural and urban areas, including in emergency situations. UNICEF is dedicated to strengthening WASH systems worldwide and does so by focusing on strengthening governments' capacities to manage the WASH sector. Their programmes support government policies, strategies, public financing and coordination with other development partners.
Since 2021, Water For People and IRC work together through a formal alliance aimed at accelerating progress toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) – water and sanitation for all. Combining forces, the two organisations aim to deliver increased reach and scale in-country, expand to new countries with new partners, promote a shared approach to systems change regionally and globally, and share expertise to improve effectiveness. Through 'Partnership for WASH Systems in Africa', UNICEF, IRC and Water For People aim to accelerate progress towards achieving SDG6 by increasing ambition and collaboration on strengthening national WASH systems in Africa.
