Abstract

One of the most serious health problems [before the ethnic unrest] facing the population of Burundi was the lack of hygiene, water and sanitation. Constructing water points and setting up an infrastructure for sanitation are not enough to alleviate the problems without an associated hygiene education programme. The Programme de Formation et d'Education en Matiere d'Hygiene (PFEH) was established in response to this need. Its main goal was to improve people's behaviour regarding hygiene, water and sanitation through education and training. Emphasis of its first campaign was on clean water. This report describes PFEH's overall goal, the key issues of the programme, its preparatory activities, different stages of the campaign and the methods used.
