There is far more to safe and reliable water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services than happy people standing by a handpump, yet that seems to be all we see. The All systems go! symposium is an event dedicated to exploring and building lasting holistic systems to make access to WASH services a reality for all. Join us in transforming how we collectively understand and see WASH systems. Show us what the WASH system looks like to you for a chance to win €100!

The theme to the competition is “WASH systems in action”. Help us show the rich diversity of actors, factors and functions that exist to make WASH service delivery possible. Picture, for example, civil society advocating for the human right to water and sanitation, handpump mechanics improving operation and maintenance of water supplies, governments making commitments through ambitious WASH policies—virtually any successes that illustrate a piece of the larger goal to strengthening WASH systems. Some call it the enabling environment, we called them the building blocks of the WASH system, all of which play a crucial role in securing lasting service delivery and include:

  • Finance
  • Infrastructure
  • Institutions
  • Learning and adaptation
  • Monitoring
  • Planning
  • Policy and legislation
  • Regulation and accountability
  • Water resources management

Please use the above building blocks as inspiration for the subjects of your photo submissions.

What to do

Submit as many photos as you would like to symposium@ircwash.org for a chance to win. Be sure to include a short image description of who is in the photo, what they are doing, where it was taken, and, if possible, why it matters. Please ensure that you are in compliance with the terms and conditions and if others are featured in the photo, with GDPR.

Deadline to submit is Monday 25 February 2019.

Selection procedure

Following the submission deadline of 25 February, IRC’s selection committee will identify and shortlist 10 images to move on to the second round. Those selected will be notified Friday 7 March 2019. These 10 images will be in the running to win one of two categories:

  • The Crowd’s pick
  • The Symposium’s pick
For the Crowd’s pick, images will be uploaded to IRC’s Facebook account. The image with the most likes wins! Voting starts 18.00h 7 March and ends 17.00 h (Central European Time) 11 March. The winner of the Crowd’s pick will automatically not qualify for the Symposium’s pick. The Symposium’s pick will be determined at the All systems go! symposium, happening 12 – 14 March 2019. The shortlisted 10 images will be printed and displayed at All systems go! where participants will vote for the winning photo.
Winners of both the Crowd’s pick and the Symposium’s pick will be announced on the final day of the event, 14 March 2019.

Winners of each category will be notified via email and will receive €100! Additionally, they will also benefit from increased exposure for their creative works when featured in our communications products—which will always include accreditation to the photographers.
