A new tool makes it possible to test where sector-wide water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) policies and practices are strong and where improvements can be made. It has been developed by the Triple-S programme of the IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre.

You can assess WASH sector performance in eight categories:

  • Policy, legislation, and instructions
  • Financing for full life-cycle costs
  • Planning
  • Transparency and accountability
  • Capacity
  • Sector learning and knowledge management
  • Harmonisation and alignment
  • Environment

The WASH sustainability assessment tool is part of a suite of evaluation tools for analysing WASH-related work and understanding sustainability issues - other tools include sustainablewash.org’s self-assessment tool for sustainability and UNICEF’s sustainability check. While the self-assessment tool for sustainability focuses on organisations and the sustainability check analyses projects, Triple-S’s sustainability assessment tool looks at the sector.
