Africa Water Week is organized biennially by the African Ministers Council on Water (AMCOW) and represents a political commitment at the highest level to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) water and sanitation targets and the 2025 Africa Water Vision. Over 1000 participants are expected from governments, regional institutions, international partners, the private sector, the scientific community, civil society and the media.

IRC strongly believes that sharing and learning among sector stakeholders is crucial for innovation and improving sector performance. Therefore we are keen on supporting the Africa Water Week and will be represented by a strong delegation consisting of the directors of IRC country offices in Burkina Faso, Ghana and Uganda and the manager of IRC's regional programme in Africa.

Local governments have a crucial role to play in the provision of water services. High time to explore experiences and solutions to strengthening local government capacity.

On Tuesday 27th May, IRC together with with SNV and Water for People will host an interactive session on the role of local government in sustainable water service delivery. Local governments have a crucial role to play in the provision of rural and small town water services. However, they often struggle to take up these tasks.

The session will provide a platform to share solutions for strengthening the capacity of local governments to deliver sustainable WASH services and to contribute to post-MDG plans.

On Wednesday 28th May IRC is convening a side session on the Africa learning initiative. The purpose of this session is to explore interest in a joint learning initiative aimed at developing a strong and coherent Africa WASH learning agenda and strengthen the policy impact of learning initiatives. The session will explore strategies, modalities and potential partnerships for knowledge sharing and innovation for improved WASH services.
