Ms Brouwer is captain of team SCA, the only all-female boat participating in the Volvo Ocean Race. The boat's sponsor SCA is a global hygiene company that includes sanitary pads and tampons in its product range.

SCA is one of the partners supporting an initiative of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) to promote menstrual hygiene management and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Other partners include Simavi, IRC, Plan Netherlands, Rutgers and SNV.

For the event on 19 June, IRC, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is inviting a group of Dutch primary school children to produce a mural on menstrual hygiene.

On 24 June a similar event takes place in Gothenborg, Sweden, where the Volvo Ocean Race finishes. SCA and the WSSCC will be joined by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, Sida, and WaterAid for a seminar on "From Stigma to Dignity: Menstruation, Incontinence and other Blind Spots in Human Development".

For more information on the event in Scheveningen, The Hague (in Dutch) see the related press release.
