Let 2015 be the year of getting ready for the post-Millennium Development Goals agenda in Burkina Faso. In the past two years, IRC supported Burkina Faso government to formulate its ambition for reaching sustainable and universal access to water, hygiene and sanitation by 2030. This process is underway and will continue in 2015. IRC Burkina plays a role in the review of sector policies and strategies and the formulation of national programmes for 2016 to 2030.

My wish for IRC Burkina in 2015 is two-fold. First of all, that the building blocks of Burkina post-millennium develoment plan reflect as much as possible the solutions developed by IRC: the service delivery approach, the life-cycle cost approach and the analysis of aid effectiveness in the sector. We will keep supporting and influencing the sector to make this wish come true. And secondly, that IRC gets ready to effectively handle its mission in Burkina Faso from 2016 to 2030 - by adjusting, improving management, and operating and financing plans for addressing the new challenges.

Getting both Burkina's authorities and IRC ready for addressing the challenges is key in 2015

The numbers support the case that this is still urgently needed. With an estimated population of 16 million inhabitants, only 54 % have water services in Burkina Faso. Sanitation figures are alarming with official figures ranging from less than 1 to 3 %. IRC Burkina Faso continues to believe in and work for the national vision that it has been supporting for many years: every person living in Burkina Faso should enjoy their basic human right for sustainable access to drinking water, hygiene and sanitation.

2015 will be a transition period between the end of Millennium Development Goals and the beginning of the Sustainable Development Goals. Thus getting both the country authorities and IRC ready for addressing this challenge is key in 2015.
