Benti Ejeta

On the 2nd of June, Mr Benti Ejeta becomes the first recipient of an award that honours and promotes a young storyteller, active in the field of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). Mr Ejeta is a communication and knowledge management specialist based at Community-Led Accelerated WASH in Ethiopia (COWASH).

"I am excited to be the winner of this first award in the memory of Ton. It encourages me a lot. In WASH we often overlook communication and I am happy to continue some of the work that Ton started", said Mr Ejeta.

The award bears the name of our dear friend and colleague Ton Schouten, who passed away on the 22nd of May last year. It commemorates his work as a gifted communicator and his love of storytelling. Mr Ejeta will receive a cash award of €2,500, one year of mentoring by IRC communications staff and the opportunity to publish his work through IRC and its partners' channels.

"We have been working with the COWASH programme for a number of years now. We know they have some really great stories to tell. We would like to help them continue telling these stories. We are happy that someone from Ethiopia will make this possible" says John Butterworth, IRC's Ethiopia Country Director.

Mr Benti Ejeta will hopefully be one of many young storytellers to carry on the work to which Ton Schouten dedicated so much of his professional life.

This will be an annual award that will be announced every year on 2nd June on Ton Schouten's birthday.
