Giving Tuesday Header
What is #GivingTuesday?

In short, it is a global day of giving, fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.

#GivingTuesday is the largest international day of giving celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognised shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

It was introduced in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y in New York and the United Nations Foundation and has quickly grown to become the largest international day of giving, with over 60 countries actively participating in the movement. Ways of participation can range from donations, volunteering to raising voices for a sympathetic cause - any form of doing good qualifies.

How does IRC support the movement?

This year, a team of different organisations (Geef.nl, Stichting Goed Nalaten, IRC) have come together to initiate the movement in the Netherlands. Over the last couple of months, more than 120 organisations have indicated that they will participate in one way or another come 3 December. We can therefore confidently say that #GivingTuesdayNL is indeed happening for the first time in 2019!

How does all this link with IRC? At the core of what we do is working and collaborating with partners around the world to help realise our goal of universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). We support collective action and share our learnings and experience as widely as possible. Sometimes this means talking to people within the WASH sector, but other times it is just as important to collaborate more widely, traversing conventional boundaries.

Supporting another form of collective action by joining the #GivingTuesdayNL movement allows us to step out of our comfort zone while still concentrating on what is at the heart of our work: people and relationships. We are using our expertise in bringing organisations together to help strengthen the #GivingTuesday movement in and beyond the Netherlands.

The global nature of #GivingTuesday allows us to connect with the wider development and non-profit sector and interested public while not losing sight of our mission to build and strengthen WASH systems that transform lives. We aim to continue telling the real story of WASH and invite others to join us in doing so.

So what's next?

We will be sharing more information with you about our involvement and opportunities to participate.

In the meantime, if you're interested here's what you can do:

  • If you speak Dutch, join us for a webinar with Nederland Filantropieland on the 5th of September.
  • Find out more about the global movement here and the movement in the Netherlands here.
