Dr. Babar Kabir explains that thanks to BRAC's WASH 1 Programme 25 million people have access to improved hygienic latrines. In this programme, which ran for 4,5 years and finished in April 2011, the focus was on hygiene. However, more time is needed to change behaviours, so in the WASH 2 Programme BRAC is looking to consolidate that behaviour change. They will now focus on the last mile: the group that is hard to convince and on a number of sub-districts that are difficult to access. They are also concentrating on building entrepreneurship skills so that small business can take over the hardware component ensuring that supply can continue. The community will also play a role in the long term sustainability. Mapping water resources and emptying pit latrines are two areas which link BRAC’s WASH work with work on food security.

Interviewed by Nick Dickinson, IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre at the Stockholm World Water Week 2011 on Wednesday 24 August 2011.
