Last week, IRC Uganda co-organised and co-financed the 3rd National Everyone Forever Hub meeting in Kampala. Over 50 representatives from different WASH organisations participated. The Ministry of Water and Environment in Uganda chaired the meeting together with IRC and Water for People.

Everyone Forever is an initiative of IRC, Water For People and Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) with one simple goal: water for everyone, forever. In Uganda, the initiative works with the Ministry of Water and Environment to achieve this.

This meeting was held to discuss how to move forward and to present different cost models to reach the 35 % of Uganda, mostly rural areas, where people still do not have access to safe water and sanitation. IRC held a session on Costing Water and Sanitation Services using the Life Cycle Cost Approach and Scaling up the Sub County Water and Sanitation Boards in Uganda.

The ministry called on the partners to advocate for increase in the budget for water and environment from 3% of the national budget to at least 10%. The ministry has commissioned a study on water as a driver of economic growth which will provide evidence to the Ministry of Finance on the need to increase the water and environment budget.

Now planned is a retreat with the Minister of Water and Environment, who will discuss the issues of universal coverage and access with selected organisations, the private sector, academia and media within the coming months. This is also part of on-going discussions on the SDGs in Uganda.
