On 25 October 2011, IRC together with other SWA partners in Honduras conducted a meeting to inform the Honduran WASH sector on the Sanitation and Water for All (SWA) global partnership and to seek the country’s interest to engage with this global partnership and to participate in the next biennial SWA High Level Meeting (HLM) which is planned in April 2012.

The SWA partners in Honduras include PAS/BM, SDC, Water for People representing the End Water Poverty coalition, UNICEF and IRC.
Participants perceived that linking up with SWA and participating in the HLM in April could serve as an extra push in the further consolidation and formalisation of the many ongoing initiatives and processes in Honduras that require high political priority, such as:
SANAA (the national utility and agency tasked with technical assistance) and CONASA (the inter-ministerial council tasked with policy and for the water sector) agreed to take the lead in convening a national high level meeting with all relevant authorities including the ministry of planning and the executive office of the president to inform them about the SWA initiative and to discuss how the ongoing sector initiatives and country processes can be reinforced by engagement with SWA.
Background
Sanitation and Water for All (SWA) is a global partnership of developing countries, donors, multi-lateral agencies, civil society and other development partners working together to achieve universal and sustainable access to sanitation and drinking water. The majority of SWA’s current 77 partners are African and Asian countries, as well as global institutions mainly based in Europe or the USA.
In June 2011, the SWA Steering Committee encouraged several Partners working in the Latin America and Caribbean region (LAC) to explore opportunities to engage countries and partners in the region given SWA’s global mandate. The preparations for the 2012 biennial SWA High Level Meeting (HLM) offer an opportunity to promote SWA in LAC and to encourage a small number of LAC countries to participate in the 2012 HLM.
