One of the first activities of the thematic group on water quality was the development of a guide on the implementation of water safety plans for the rural water and sanitation sector in Honduras. Staff from various organisations have been trained in the use of this guide. The group also organised fora, workshops and conferences on the theme of water quality, on different technologies for water treatment. The group also documented the implementation of the Aguaclara treatment plant in Honduras and reactivated the committee for water quality (CALAGUA) to revise policies and water quality standards.

The focus of the IRC support towards this thematic group has not been so much content related, but rather support in the documentation of processes in order to capture lessons learned.

Currently the themtatic group is coordinated by the Honduran water and sanitation utility SANAA in collaboration with AIDIS and counts with members from AHJASA the Honduran Association of Water Boards, the regulator of water and sanitation services (ERSAPS), CRS, the national autonomous university of Honduras (UNAH), the Peace Corps, the national supervisory board for water and sanitation (CONASA), Inter-Institutional Environmental Sciences Committee (CICA), the Honduran Social Investment Fund (FHIS), Agua para el Pueblo (APP), OPMS/WHO, the SODIS Foundation and Action Aid.
