Several training and documentation activities on sanitation, driven by the Water and Sanitation Program of the World Bank, IRC and the events around the International Year of Sanitation (2008), were the drivers to start up a thematic group on sustainable sanitation.

The thematic group on sanitation has two areas of work. One of these is the development and the design of a National Sanitation Plan. This group is still active and actually the majority of the members of this group is also part of the thematic group.

The other area of work is on training events, including courses on ecological sanitation. The group also implemented a demonstration project with the support of the members of the branch office of RAS-HON in the North of Honduras, especially Water for People. The experiences were published in several magazines and resulted in a field note.

Currently the thematic group is coordinated by the Peace Corps, and counts with members from SANAA, the Honduran water and sanitation utility, the regulator of water and sanitation services (ERSAPS), Water for People, UNDP, the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH), the Polytechnical University for Engineering (UPI), the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), the national supervisory board for water and sanitation (CONASA), the Honduran Social Investment Fund (FHIS), and the Swiss Cooperation in Central America.
