This overview of activities and reports gives an impression of what has been achieved in the Pan-Africa programme.

Annual reports

Annual plans, reports and review meeting reports have been published for the programme, keeping everyone informed of progress, challenges and way forward:

Case studies

Case studies from four countries in Africa, the cases are looking at involving schools and children in CLTS as well as the role of the community.

Conferences and workshops

International conferences looking at sanitation in a wider context were suitable platforms to have exchanges on the experiences gained in the Pan-Africa Programme:

Learning alliances

A workshop was held on Learning Alliances in Kampala, Uganda, in September 2011. Some of the topics discussed were:

  • definition of learning alliances
  • learning alliances in the countries
  • activities to be undertaken in learning alliances through a logical action plan
  • communication strategy for the country teams.

Lessons learnt

As the project is taking place in eight different countries and there are many different contexts in which people work, various lessons can be learnt. Lessons are shared in various documents:

Literature review

A reference list has been compiled giving an overview of key literature on community-led total sanitation and school-led total sanitation in Asia and Africa.

Monitoring

Resources (on CLTS)

Some titles focusing specifically on African countries and their experiences with CLTS are:

Situational analysis

Each country in the programme has written a situational analysis, given facts about their country, the sanitation situation, institutional mapping, existing platforms and their targets within the Pan-Africa programme: Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Niger, Sierra Leone, Uganda and Zambia.

School-Led Total Sanitation

CLTS focuses on rural communities in general while School-Led Total Sanitation (SLTS) focuses on schools and children. Schools are seen as centres of change in the community and school children are bringing home lessons learnt and influence their families and other children in the community. A thesis looks at the SLTS initiatives in Ghana.

Trigger

The publications Trigger 2010, Trigger 2011 and Trigger 2012 give overviews of progress made in the Pan-Africa programme and showcase individual experiences within the programme. There are case studies focusing on the role of women, natural leaders and children, as well are stories on toilet construction, SLTS and UCLTS.

Urban Community-Led Total Sanitation (UCLTS)

Urban Community-Led Total Sanitation (UCLTS) is a methodology for mobilizing urban communities to completely eliminate open defecation (OD). Communities in urban settings are facilitated to conduct their own appraisal and analysis of open defecation (OD) and take their action to become open defecation free (ODF).

A presentation on urban CLTS, by Wiscot Mwanza, Charles Ngira, Marielle Snel, Amsalu Negussie, Mulugeta Balecha and Atalie Fissaha, was given at the Annual Pan-Africa meeting in Lilognwe, Malawi in March 2013.
