IRC prepared two sessions for the 39th WEDC International Conference 'Ensuring Availability and Sustainable Management of Water and Sanitation for All' which will be taking place in Kumasi in Ghana, from 11 – 15 July.

Ghana is transforming its rural water monitoring system that will enable tracking of progress towards achievement of sub-sector targets and the Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) in terms of access, functionality and service levels. This process is being led by the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) of Ghana in partnership with IRC, Akvo and Skyfox and collaborative funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Dutch Government, World Bank, UNICEF, the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation and SNV.
Objective of the event is to share Ghana’s experience in enhancing its rural water monitoring framework, methods and procedures from counting systems to tracking functionality and services. It is also to showcase how local governments are positioning themselves to use the data to inform evidence based dialogues and decisions on planning, budgeting and finance.
Staff of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency and District Assemblies will present how the service indicator framework was developed, experimented, adapted and institutionalized; and the processes underway to scale it up from 3 to 131 districts. They will also highlight challenges faced and the unresolved issues of moving from data to investment. The session will enable participants to jointly explore emerging water service monitoring issues that need to be collectively addressed.

Achieving access to adequate and equitable sanitation and ending open defecation are some of the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals. The Sanitation Challenge for Ghana, launched by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development of Ghana with financial support from DFID, is a competition to incentivise local authorities to improve the provision of sanitation services.
The objective of the event is to present and discuss the urban sanitation strategies developed by the winners of the Duapa Award, the first phase of the Sanitation Challenge for Ghana. The strategies presented will show case examples of excellence in how to tackle the issues of urban sanitation in cities in Ghana and will be of inspiration to numerous additional local authorities and potential partners. Setting up successful partnerships with other actors, such as private sector stakeholders and NGOs, and presenting innovative approaches are key criteria for the selection of the winning local authorities.
The event will include an introduction to the Sanitation Challenge for Ghana, which will be delivered by a representative of the consortium, followed by presentations held directly by representatives of the winning local authorities. The strategies presented will show case examples of excellence in how to tackle the issues of urban sanitation in cities in Ghana and will be of inspiration to the other local authorities attending the event.
